Frequently Asked Questions

Find a Friend. Be a Friend. Support the Friends.

For your convenience, here are some questions we are often asked by people who are interested in the Friends of Wilbraham Seniors. If you have other questions, feel free to email us, or submit them on the form located on the Contact Us page.

Q:  What does the Friends group do?

A:
The Friends of Wilbraham Seniors raise funds to support services, programs, and events run by the Senior Center/Council on Aging (COA). Recent fundraising efforts include sponsoring numerous dine-ins/take-outs at area restaurants, 50/50 and basket raffles, holiday bazaars, craft fairs, dinners, and more. Currently we are engaged in a major Capital Fundraising Campaign to raise funds for items needed in the new Center, such as furniture, tables, chairs, TV monitors, exercise equipment, and much more. In addition, the Friends have a Senior Assistance Fund where we support seniors who, as a last resort, need one-time financial assistance with utility, heating bills, prescriptions etc.

Q:  How do I join the Friends?

A:
It’s easy!  Click here for a copy of the Friends’ Membership Application.  Join us and be part of an engaging, active group of volunteers who support the Wilbraham Senior Center in various ways.

Q:  Are Membership meetings mandatory? Are there annual dues?

A:
No. Attendance to our quarterly meetings is voluntary and there are no dues.  Feel free to join us and learn more about the organization’s work and the services available to our seniors. It’s a very rewarding experience to help others!

Q:  How can I volunteer?

A:
The Friends of Wilbraham Seniors’ mission is to raise money to support the varied and dynamic programs of the Senior Center/COA. We are always looking for volunteers to support our mission. Opportunities to share your skills and time exist on a regular basis, ranging from membership, fundraising, computer skills, publicity, research, administrative support, phone calls, and accounting and financial support (experience with Quickbooks and Excel is a definite plus). To volunteer, contact Deb Gormley, Membership Director, at dgormley@charter.net.

Q:  How do you communicate with Members and Supporters?

A:
We send out timely e-blasts to our Members and Supporters on new Friends’ information and/or updates on the status of important events. However, to receive this popular benefit we must have your email address. In addition, each month we publish in Wilbraham Senior News articles on Page 6 which is a dedicated page for the Friends. The newsletter is also available online on the Town’s website.  To request a newsletter be mailed to you or a family member, please call (413) 596-8379. There is no fee, but a $5.00 annual donation is suggested to offset the cost of postage.

Q:  Where is the new Senior Center and when did it open?

A:
The new 15,554 sq. ft Senior Center is located behind the Wilbraham Town Hall at 240 Springfield Street. The address for the Senior Center itself is 250 Springfield Street. It opened officially with a Ribbon Cutting ceremony on Saturday, April 20. It is now open from 8 – 4, Monday -Friday.

Q:  What is the Capital Campaign all about?

A:
Since the construction and building budget only included the building itself, the Friends Friends have set a goal to raise $750,000 to furnish various accessories such as tables, chairs, kitchen supplies, exercise equipment, audio-visual equipment, television monitors, back-up generator, IT equipment to name a few.
